What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a false tooth root that is anchored to the jawbone using a special titanium screw. It holds a crown or bridge in place in the same way that a root supports a natural tooth. They allow you to eat, chew, smile, laugh, and talk normally . With good care, implants can last for many years.
Why You May Need a Dental Implant
The loss of a single or multiple teeth can lead to serious dental complications if left untreated. Even if the tooth loss is in the rear of the mouth, it can impact teeth and gums in the front and harm your smile! You should thus consider dental implants if:

What is The Process to Do It?
Before any work, your dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth and mouth. S/he will review your dental history, take X-rays or photos to evaluate which option suits you best. Additionally, if X-rays are not adequate, your dentist may order a computed tomography (CT) scan to provide three-dimensional images to determine how much jawbone is present to hold the implants in place. Depending on your condition, the dentist will advise you accordingly.
- Single tooth replacement: Your dentist will first numb the area, make a small incision in the gum to expose the bone, and then use a special drill to shape the implant site. The implant is then inserted deep into the jawbone and a healing cap placed on top of it, which protrudes through the gum. A period of healing (3-6 months) is then allowed for the implant to fuse with the bone.
Once successful fusion has taken place, the healing cap is removed and an abutment or connector is cemented onto the tip of the implant. An implant crown is then placed on the top to simulate an actual tooth.
- Fixed-bridge on implant: With this procedure, multiple implants are inserted into the jaw, and a fixed bridge cemented on them spanning the whole section of missing teeth. Abutments (crowns) are placed on either side of the missing teeth, and artificial teeth (“pontics”) connected in between the crowns. On average, a complete replacement of the entire jaw needs 4 to 8 implants.
- Support for dentures: Most Patients who have lost virtually all their teeth find this procedure quite useful. The dentist will insert several implants into the jaw to act as support for dentures just like natural teeth. They look and function just like natural teeth, and will thus enable you to smile, chew, and laugh a lot easier.
